Crochet Shawl Shapes Made Simple: A Peek Inside My Upcoming Book
One of the things I hear most often about crochet—especially crochet shawls—is that they’re stiff, bulky, or overly complicated. And honestly? That belief usually comes from not understanding shape and construction.
That’s exactly why I’m writing my newest book: a beginner-friendly guide to crochet shawl shapes and how they’re built.
I’m excited to share that the book is officially moving forward in a big way. The foundational sample shawl constructions are complete, and the full shawl patterns are ready to head to the photographer.
The Three Crochet Shawl Shapes That Build Everything
At the heart of the book are three core crochet shawl shapes:
Top-down triangle shawls
Top-down crescent shawls
Sideways asymmetrical shawls
These shapes form the foundation for every design in the book—and once you understand how they work, an entire world of creative possibility opens up.
The samples shown above are intentionally simple. They’re designed to clearly demonstrate:
how each shawl shape grows
how increases and construction affect drape
how stitch placement changes the way fabric moves on the body
Instead of guessing or memorizing rules, you can see the structure clearly.
Follow the Pattern—or Design Your Own
One of my favorite things about crochet is how adaptable it is.
In this book, you can absolutely follow the shawl patterns exactly as written. But you can also treat these shapes as a framework for your own creativity. Change the yarn. Experiment with color. Swap stitch patterns. Adjust scale and texture.
The goal isn’t just to make one shawl—it’s to understand how shawls work so you can confidently create many.
Why This Book Matters
Crochet shawls deserve to be beautiful, drapey, and thoughtfully designed—not dismissed or underestimated.
This book is about making crochet shawl construction approachable and empowering. It’s about giving crocheters the tools to understand shape, choose the right yarn and hook, and create shawls that feel intentional and wearable—without intimidation or gatekeeping.
Pre-orders for the book will be opening soon, and I’ll be sharing more previews in the coming weeks, including behind-the-scenes peeks into my sketchbook and design process.
